Why Liverpool should be wary of Atletico Madrid ahead of their second leg round of sixteen Champions League clash

Jürgen kloop’s Liverpool play host to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid tonight as the Reds look to overturn the 1-0 defeat they suffered at the Wanda Metropolitano three weeks ago and book their quarter finals ticket as they look to continue their title defence.

The Reds come into this this game of the back of a 25 games unbeaten run in at home in Europe. The Reds have won 18 of those games and have drawn just seven and that put them in good spirit as they take on Atletico Madrid who also have a very good record against English opposition’s in Europe with 8 victories in 10 knock out games against English oppositions.

Neither of the two sides are in good form especially considering their performances in their respective leagues of recent but recent form might not necessarily play a role tonight as the Atletico Madrid look to send the defending Champions packing.

Liverpool are at home  but here is why they should be weary of Atletico Madrid:

  • The Rojiblancos have won 30 of the 38 UEFA competition ties in which they won at home in the l first leg –  Only last season’s defeat by Juventus ended a run of 19 consecutive aggregate victories after a home win in the first game.
  • Atletico Madrid have victories in 10 knock out games against English oppositions.
  • Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in their last four visits to England and have not failed to score in their last three visits.
  • Diego Simeone’s side have won four of their six round of 16 ties. They only lost the first – on away goals against Porto in 2008/09 – and the last.
  • Atlético have lost only five of their last 29 matches in continental competition (W18 D6) despite losing on match day four and five to Bayern Leverkusen and Juventus respectively.

Although, the Reds have a good home record and they have been victorious at home in the last six matches against Spanish, Atletico Madrid, with advantage in their side are a different breed and they might just end Liverpool’s title defense tonight.
