Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team DTigress have secured a fourth consecutive Women’s Afrobasket title after an enthralling final at the BK Arena in Kigali.
The DTigress beat their fiercest rival Senegal 84-74 on Saturday in a final that could have gone either way based on the close margin at the end of the third quarter.
With the victory over the West African neighbors, the DTigress have now equaled Senegal’s 42-year-old record of four consecutive titles which lasted between (1974-1981).
Nigeria’s record dates back to 2017 when they won the championship for the third time. The latest triumph means that DTigress have now won the Women’s Afrobasket six times and they are the most successful side behind Senegal who have won the competition eleven times.
Coach Rena, a former player of the team becomes the first woman head coach to win the Women’s Afrobasket championship.
