Crawford rose to fame in the 1950s as an original Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club and even greater fame as the son of Chuck Connors’ title character in the 1959-63 Western series The Rifleman. He was 75 years old at the time of his death.

Johnny Crawford was born John Ernest Crawford in Los Angeles into a theatrical and musical family – his paternal grandfather worked for Irving Berlin – and was only six years old when his Sunday school teacher, who also happened to be an agent, began finding work for the gifted youngster. Crawford was cast in 16 episodes of The Mickey Mouse Club after auditioning with a performance of the Johnnie Ray smash “Cry.”

Career

Crawford made guest appearances on shows like The Lone Ranger, The Frank Sinatra Show, The Danny Thomas Show, and Wagon Train before earning the part of Mark McCain on The Rifleman in 1958.

Crawford was nominated for an Emmy in 1959 for his performance as the son of a widowed rancher who wielded a Winchester rifle. Bobby Crawford, his brother, was nominated for an Emmy for a performance in an episode of Playhouse 90 in the same year, as was their father, Robert Crawford, who worked as an editor on The Bob Cummings Show.

Crawford released a succession of songs during his Rifleman heyday, the most popular of which was the whispery “Cindy’s Birthday,” which reached No. 8 on the charts in June 1962.

Crawford kept busy with guest appearances on episodic television in the 1960s and 1970s, with credits on shows including Rawhide, Lancer, The Big Valley, Hawaii Five-O, Little House on the Prairie, and, later, Murder She Wrote.

In 1965, he co-starred in The Restless Ones with Kim Darby, and in Village of the Giants with Beau Bridges, Ron Howard, and Tommy Kirk the same year. In the 1967 film El Dorado, he starred alongside John Wayne, and in the 1973 film The Naked Ape, he starred alongside Victoria Principal.
