FIFA Clears Wrexham Goalkeeper Arthur Oknonkwo To Play For Super Eagles

FIFA has confirmed Arthur Okonkwo’s switch of international allegiance from England to Nigeria.

The Wrexham goalkeeper decided to represent the Super Eagles late last year. The 24-year-old represented England at the Under-16 to U18 level but never earned a senior cap for the Three Lions.

Okonkwo was born in Camden, England, and qualified to play for the African powerhouse through his parents. Unfortunately, he will not feature for Nigeria at the 2026 World Cup after the Super Eagles lost their qualification play-off to DR Congo.

DR Congo then beat Jamaica in their intercontinental play-off clash last month. Axel Tuanzebe scored an extra-time goal that handed the Leopards a 1-0 victory and secured their first World Cup place in 52 years.

Arthur Okonkwo could make his debut when the Super Eagles of Nigeria take on Poland and Portugal in friendly matches in June.

Okonkwo progressed through the Arsenal academy after joining the Gunners from Lindus Park in 2009.

During his time at the club, he spent loan spells with Crewe Alexandra in 2022 and Austrian side Sturm Graz in 2023.

Okonkwo joined Wrexham on loan for the 2023/24 season before signing permanently with the Red Dragons two years ago.

Since then, he has become a mainstay in Phil Parkinson’s side. Wrexham have enjoyed a whirlwind few years since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney became majority shareholders in February 2021.

In that time, the club has climbed from the National League all the way to the Championship.

Wrexham still sit firmly in play-off contention, but they face a tough fight if they want to secure a Premier League place.
