Former Super Eagles midfielder Dickson Etuhu has been banned for five years in five years for a match-fixing scandal.
The incident involving Etuhu happened in May 2017, where he allegedly offered a bribe to Kenny Stamatopoulos a former teammate at AIK Stockholm to fix the result of a game against Gothenburg.
Etuhu who is now 27 reported offered Stamatopoulos who was the Reserve goalkeeper £180,000 to underperform as the first choice was not available due to injury.
Etuhu was found guilty of his actions in November 2019 and was able to avoid prison sentence serving probation.
The Swedish Football Association has now released a statement revealing that Etuhu was “deliberately trying to persuade an Allsvenskan player to underperform in one of their team’s matches”..
The statement said, “The Disciplinary Board has decided to suspend two people because they have deliberately tried to persuade a football player to underperform in one of the team’s matches.
“Through their actions, these people have violated the anti-match fixing regulations, and they are therefore suspended for five years.
“The ban includes training, competing or performing any assignments in any sports.”
Etuhu who made 33 appearances for the Super Eagles of Nigeria from 2007 till 2011 and played for English sides Norwich, Sunderland, Manchester City, Blackburn, and Fulham cannot play in any Scandinavian country until April 13, 2025.
