Luis Suarez sets record as Barcelona beat Villarreal 4-1 to close gap in La Liga race (video)
Barcelona recorded a 4-1 away win against Villarreal in a Spanish La Liga encounter played on Sunday, July 5th.
After Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0 earlier in the day Barcelona needed a win to close the gap between to four points.
Barcelona went in front thanks to an own goal by Pau Torres in the third minute. However, Villarreal responded with an equaliser through Gerard Moreno in the 14th minute.
Lionel Messi supplied Luis Suarez to put Barcelona back in front in the 20th minute. The goal meant Suarez tied László Kubala for third on Barça’s all-time scoring list with 194 goals.
Messi then created the third for Antoine Griezmann to make it 3-1 with a splendid chip from the edge of the area and give Barcelona a two goal cushion at the halftime break.
Ansu Fati scored the fourth for Barcelona in the 86th minute provided by Jordi Alba. The strike was the 9000th goal in Barcelona history.
The goal win means that Barcelona are four points behind rivals Real Madrid in the race for La Liga with four games left to play
