The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) have rolled out plans to organise basketball tryouts in different locations for players willing join the senior women’s basketball team, DTigress ahead of the Africa Women’s Championship later this month.

In a statement on the official website of the federation, the tryouts will hold in Lagos, Abuja and Chicago and interested players are to register and show up at the venue closest to them to stand a chance of being selected to represent the country at the tournament.

The NBBF proudly and happily announces an Open tryout for all female Basketball Athletes.

“The Tryout is to invite and encourage fit and properly motivated athletes who will Ultimately represent Nigeria and be a part of the Elite D’Tigress Team . The Coaching staff and Scouts will be at the Venues to select athletes who exhibit outstanding skills and potentials. The Venues and Dates are indicated on the flyers. Kindly register by scanning the QR code on the flyers.”

The core of DTigress team which consists of captain Adaora Elonu, Ezinne Kanu-Phelps, Victoria Macualay, Odera Chidom, Ify Ibekwe, Amy Okonwo and five others who won the last tournament have not featured for the team since 2021 over payment and welfare issues with the Sport ministry.

The mostly foreign-based players qualified for the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Australia but didn’t participate in the tournament after they were banned by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Dtigress go into the Women’s Afrobasket In Rwanda as defending champions with the aim of equalling Senegal’s record of four consecutive title triumphs which they achieved between 1974 and 1981.

The team also go to the tournament with a new coach who once played for the team. Nigeria are grouped alongside Egypt and Democratic Republic of Congo.
