Nnadozie Earns Super Falcons Crucial Point Against Canada In FIFA Women’s Cup Group B Opener!

Super Falcons of Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie put forth an exceptional performance as she earned the team a point in their opening fixture of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup against Canada.

The Paris FC goalie saved a 50th-minute penalty kick from veteran striker Christine Sinclair to deny the 40-year-old striker the record of the oldest player to score a goal in the history of the tournament.

Francesca Ordega’s tackle in the box gave the Canadians the chance to take the lead but Nnadozie’s double save kept the Super Falcons in the game.

Nigeria started the game with a lot of nerves in the opening 20 minutes of the game as they struggled to pass the ball around and make meaningful threats towards Canada’s goal area.

However, Ifeoma Onumonu’s long-range shot in the 22nd minute which was saved by Kailen Sheridan opened up the game for the Nigerian ladies.

Assist Oshoala could have given the Super Falcons the lead before halftime but the FC Barcelona striker opted to find a teammate in the box rather than aiming at goal.

The Super Falcons were less adventurous in the second half especially after Sinclair’s missed penalty as they aimed to catch the Canadians on the counter.

Unfortunately, one of the outstanding performers on the night, Abiodun Deborah was sent off for a late challenge on a Canadian player. The young and energetic midfielder will miss the game against Australia on the 27th of July in Brisbane.

With the goalless draw, the Super Falcons remain unbeaten against the Olympic champions in three FIFA Women’s World Cup meetings.
