Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr has highlighted two major reasons why he thinks teams from Africa can’t win the world cup for now.
According to Gernot Rohr, African teams lack the quality to win the 91-year-old tournament. The Franco-German said this while speaking to News Central TV recently.
Gernot Rohr mentioned that the level of organisation of most African teams is poor as he refers to the inability of the Super Eagles to play in Lagos for the past 10 years.
Gernot Rohr revealed that one of the hindrances to an Africa team winning the World Cup is the inability of a good number of their players to play for big European clubs.
We are not ready yet in Africa to win the World Cup for several reasons,
The first reason for me is the organisation, general organisation; there are still a lot of problems, for travelling, for preparation of the game specifically. We have not been able to play in Lagos for over 10 years, here there is no tradition.
France is world champions for the moment, where do their players play? They play in PSG, Bayern Munich and other big clubs. Four of them play for Bayern, Tolisso, Pavard – who scored in the final – Lucas Hernandez and Kingsley Coman. When you have so many players from your country playing in the best clubs, the probability that you have one of the best teams in the world is very big.
Gernot Rohr believes that the possibility of teams winning the World Cup will increase if at least 15-20 of their players play for teams in Europe. This, according to him will allow the manager to pick from a big pool of quality players when preparing for tournaments.
What we have in Nigeria for example, we have our players in Fulham, West Brom, not Bayern Munich, not PSG, not Liverpool and not Manchester City, not Barcelona, not Real Madrid, but these other countries have their players there. So, it would be a miracle if we win the World Cup.
Gernot Rohr will return to the touchline next month when the Super Eagles take on Lesotho in the second leg of their #AFCON2021 qualifiers at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
