OTD in 1999, the USA beat China 5-4 on penalties to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup (video)
On July 10th, 1999, the United States of America (USA) beat China 5-4 on penalties to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
It was the second triumph for the USA after they also won in 1991 hosted by China.
The game was a closely contested encounter as there were no goals after 90 minutes and the extra time and, therefore, required penalties.
Liu Ying missed for China while Xie Huilin, Qiu Haiyan, Zhang Ouying and Sun Wen all scored
For the USA Carla Overbeck, Joy Fawcett, Kristine Lilly, Mia Hamm, and Brandi Chastain all scored.
The USA who were the hosts of the competition won the penalty shoot-out 5-4 in from of 90,185 fans in attendance at the Rose Bowl, Pasadena.
