Less than 24 hours after Victor Osimhen finished 8th at the just concluded 2023 Ballon D’or Awards, the Super Eagles striker has been nominated for the most prestigious individual football award on the continent.
Osimhen was shortlisted alongisde former winners: Mohammed Salah, Riyad Mahrez and Sadio Mane for the 2023 edition of the award.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) via its X page released a shortlit of 30 players for the prize on Wednesday.
Victor Osimhen’s nomination came off the back of his brilliant outing for club and country in the 2022/2023 football season.
The 24-year-old striker ped Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years last season. He also finished the season as top scorer on the league with 26 goals on 31 games.
The Super Eagles striker was also ruthless in front of goal for the national team as scored the most goals – 10 during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Former Super Eagles forward, Kanu Kwankwo is the last Nigerian recipient of the award. The former Inter Milan and Arsenal forward won the award in 1999. He had earlier won the award in 1996.
The 2023 CAF Awards is scheduled to hold in the Moroccan city of Marakech on the 11th of December, 2023.
