Why I substituted Lionel Messi! – Pochettino explains after PSG dramatic win at Lyon

PSG coach, Mauricio Pochettino has explained why he took off Lionel Messi in the 76th minute in the team’s 2-1 victory over Lyon away from home.

The Argentine captain was dazed at Pochettino’s decision to take him off when the match was still 1-1. Messi’s countenance had disappointment written all over it as he stared at his manager on the sidelines.

Pochettino in his post-match conference explained why he took off the six-time Ballon D’or winner.

“I think everyone knows that we have many great players, with a 35-man squad. We have to make choices within the matchday squad and then during the game, keeping in mind what’s best for the team and every player,” Pochettino told a media conference.

“Sometimes the decisions are positive, or not. But that’s what managers are there to do on the sidelines, to make decisions. It can please people or not. I asked him how he was, and he said he was fine, no issues.”

Mayor Icardi’s late header secured three points for PSG as they maintained their 100% start to the season with 18 points after 6 matches.

PSG are now five points clear of Marseille in second place on the Ligue 1 table.
