Akin Alabi who represents Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency has petitioned the House of Representatives to dissolve the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian Police.
He cited that the unit has been notorious for harassing and brutalising Nigerian youths especially and they have remained in the headlines “Over ceaseless killings and attacks on innocent citizens”
The Lawmaker also added that SARS are now so power-drunk that the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu can’t even control them or check their excesses.
He added that there are more than enough evidences on social media to back up the claims on the recklessness of the police unit which has made the public call for its proscription.
Akin Alabi also added that the Nigerian Police fall short of international best practices which has made the citizens see them as an enemy rather than a “friend”
Policing in Nigeria continues to fall short of modern practices where citizens should be treated with utmost respect and decorum, therefore making it very difficult for an average citizen to truly trust that the police are their friends.”
Akin Alabi’s motion is set to be deliberated upon in today’s plenary session at the floor of the green chamber.
