OTD in 2014: Luis Suarez is charged with biting Giorgio Chiellini at the FIFA World Cup (video)

On June 25th , 2014 Luis Suarez was officially charged with biting Giorgio Chiellini by football’s governing body.

The actual incident happened on June 24th in the final group game D game between Uruguay and Italy at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Uruguay won the game thanks to a corner kick headed in by Diego Godin in the 81st minute.

The win meant Uruguay qualified for the knockout stage in second place from group D.

However, an incident occurred in the game, as Luis Suarez of Uruguay used hit teeth and bit Giorgio Chiellini of Italy.

In front of 39,706 fans in attendance at the Arena das Dunas, Natal it was not given by Mexican referee Marco Rodríguez.

Suarez stayed on the pitch and helped his side to victory as there was no use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) at the time.

Upon review by FIFA,  Suarez was handed a nine-match international suspension and banned from all football-related activity for four months.
