Remi Tinubu: Party allegiance over National Security! A potential first lady?

Remi Tinubu might be having a severe “headache” right now because she has been receiving heavy “knocks” from Nigerians on social media over her comment and it might have ended her first lady dream as well as her husband’s Presidential ambition prematurely.

One would have expected that all politicians, at this critical time when Nigeria is on the brink of falling apart with regards to the growing state of insecurity, would speak with one voice, unfortunately, it is not the case.

Remi Tinubu, the wife of the National Leader of the All Progressive People’s Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has shown Nigerians that is more concerned about being loyal to the party rather than showing empathy for the recent killings by Boko Haram and Armed Bandits in the country and also criticising the Federal Government for its shortcomings.

The Lawmaker came under severe criticisms for the comments she made while Senator Smart Adeyemi of Kogi West was lamenting the high level of insecurity in the country at the floor of the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday.

Senator Smart Adeyemi, who was almost close to shedding tears said;

“This is the worst instability we are facing. This is worse than the civil war”

“We cannot pretend that we are capable of handling the situation in our hands. America, as powerful as they are, when the pandemic came, it came to a point China came to their rescue.”

“We shouldn’t pretend that we need foreign support now. Billions of naira have been voted for security services and nothing is coming out of it.”

Despite how passionately the Senator spoke about the insecurity situation of the country, Remi Tinubu interjected by asking if he is now in the opposition party (People’s Democratic Party) or whether he is now a wolf in sheep clothing?”

She said; “Are you in PDP (Peoples Democratic Party)? Are you a wolf in sheep’s clothing?”

Remi Tinubu’s comment is an indication that she will rather stand behind her party at the expense of the nation’s security challenges. How can Nigerians trust her to be a good first lady considering her husband’s 2023 Presidential ambition?

Being the first lady of a nation comes with a lot of responsibilities especially in a diverse country where citizens are divided along ethnic and religious lines. A peacemaker, virtuous woman filled with empathy are some of the desirable qualities that a first lady should possess but Remi Tinubu has shown that she will rather sow a seed of discord and economise the truth when it matters most.

She was reported to have said a particular tribe in Lagos cannot be trusted because they refused to vote for her preferred candidate during the February 23rd Presidential election in 2019.

“How will I know? You Igbos, We no dey trust una again” – A statement made by Senator Remi Tinubu after she cast her vote during the 2019 Gubernatorial election in Lagos while conversing with a physically challenged Igbo man. Although, the man said he voted for President Buhari.

Now if Nigerians have to put their trust in Remi Tinubu to represent the interest of the nation especially as the first lady, irrespective of tribe, party affiliation or religion, she has shown Nigerians she will fail successfully.

But you never can tell, Nigerians can be very dramatic, she might be forgiven because she made the comment when she was “young” just like another party member, Pantami did.
