Super Falcons Suffer Narrow Defeat To France In International Friendly

Nigeria senior women’s football team, the Super Falcons lost to France in an international friendly match on Saturday night.

The encounter took place at the Raymond-Kopa Stadium in Angers, France in front of over 18,000 fans which included a number of Nigerian supporters.

It was quite a close match but the home side were dominant in key moments of the match as they showed their superior quality.

After moments of sustained pressure fromghe French ladies, veteran striker Le Sommer scored the opener on the 29th minute.

The 35-year-old Lyon striker found herself in space, received a cut-back pass from Marie Antoinette Katoto and tapped the ball into the net.

Amel Majri doubled the lead for the host after the Super Falcons failed to clear their lines. A loose ball fell to the path of the Lyon midfielder and she buried it.

The Super Falcons, deapite beijg down by two goals kept pushing forward to get half the deficit before halftime.

Eventually the breakthrough came in the last minute of added time of the first half.

A counter attack was launched from the deep. Gift Monday used ger pass to beat a defender and layed a pass to Ifeoma Onumonu.

Onumonu continued with her run into the box, used her strenth to maintain balance before putting the ball into back of the net.

Chiamaka Nnadozie was the heroine of the aecond half as she kept the scoreline respectable with a number of saves.

The match ended 2-1 as the Super Falcons recorded their second consecutive loss to the French side.

The Super Falcons were without key players like six-time Africa women’s footballer of the year, Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, Christy Ucheibe, Deborah Abiodun and a couple of others.
