Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers scored the winning goal for Rangers as the former Scottish champions recorded a 2-1 home win over Swiss side Servette at the Ibrox on Wednesday as they take a slim advantage ahaed of the second leg in Switzerland.
James Tavernier gave the home side the lead very early in the game via a penalty kick after Servette’s David Douline tripped Donatas Rumsas in the box.
It didn’t take too long before Rangers doubled their advantage and it was Cyriel Dessers, the new signing from Cremonese who did just that.
Cyriel Dessers latched onto a brilliant cross into the box before burying the ball right into the middle of goal to register his goal for Rangers.
Unfortunately, Dessers gave away a penalty late in the first half after he was judged to have handled the ball in hi own box. Chris Bedia made no mistake as he halved the deficit by one to bring Servette back into the game.
Dessers could have redeemed himself in the 70th minute but the Nigerian striker missed from point blank range as Servette’s goalkeeper, Joel Mall put forth a brilliant save to deny him his second goal and Rangers third on the night.
The match ended 2-1 in favour of Glasgow Rangers and Michael Beale’s side will look to secure qualification into the final stage of the UEFA Champions league qualification round as they travel to Switzerland next week with a 2-1 lead.
