The women’s senior national basketball team of Nigeria, DTigress began their Afrobasket 2023 title defence in style with a very impressive win over the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Nigeria led in all four quarters of the match with at least 3 points as they defeated the Congolese side by 34 points in their opening match.
DTigress started the game slowly as they shot 40% from the 2 points line from 5 attempts while they made 37% of their 3-point attempts.
The second was quite a poor display from Rena Wakama’s ladies even though they led in points scored. DTigress only shot just 13% from their 2-point attempts. The DTigress were also poor beyond the arc as they registered 14% of their shots.
The Congolese took advantage of DTigress sloppiness in the second quarter as they registered 3 out of 8 2-point attempts – an improvement on what they registered in the first quarter.
However, the DTigress improved on their shooting in the third quarter. The Nigerian ladies were also ruthless from the free throw line as they scored 87% of their attempts.
The DTigress became more ruthless in the fourth quarter as they went on a 19-point run extending their lead by 33 points.
Elizabeth Balogun led the team in points with 11 while veteran Shooting Guard Sarah Ogoke scored 10 points and made 6 rebounds.
Nigeria will take on Egypt in their second group game on Sunday.
