Why Lagos commuters must pay more for BRT buses from August 1, 2020

The management of Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL), operators of the Lagos BRT bus franchise has revealed the reason why governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved an increase in fares for the buses effective August 1, 2020.

According to Kolawole Ojelabi, the assistant director, corporate communication, at the Lagos Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LAMATA), the new fare regime based on the need to sustain the operation following the negative effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

LBSL had argued that conveying no more than 20 passengers per bus on each trip had resulted in only 14 percent utilisation of the busload factor which in turn led to a 72 percent drop in revenue while running costs remained fairly the same.

The LAMATA official said the bus operators were also granted approval to increase passengers from 20 to 24.
