Australian of the Year Grace Tame has revealed her engagement to partner Max Heerey after a tumultuous year-long romance and unveiled her typically unique ring. 

Grace shared the exciting news in an Instagram post on Saturday that left Aussie influencers all round sending congratulations.

The post showed off Grace’s unconventional ring with a dark deep blue sapphire stone and showed the moment Max popped the question while on a bike ride.

‘I said, “yeeeES!!!” OATH YES! Love you forever and ever angel man,’ Grace captioned the post.

Well wishers for the happy news – just days before her reign as Australian of the Year ends – included Olympic swimmer Giaan Rooney, news presenter Katrina Blowers, and radio personality Wendy Harmer.

‘Wonderful news! You both deserve all the happiness in the world,’ Giaan wrote.

‘How beautiful. Congratulations you two,’ Katrina said.

Grace and Max had met a week before the Australia Day Awards after Grace had recently moved back to Tasmania.

A week later she had been named Tasmanian of the Year and went into the running for Australian of the year.

Max has been an avid supporter of Grace’s projects and became the Foundation’s Chief Operating Officer and board member for the Grace Tame Foundation which helps sex abuse survivors.

Since becoming Australian of the Year, Grace has used her voice to unwaveringly speak for legal reform for sexual abuse survivors and change culture around sexual abuse crimes.

Grace’s work comes after she was groomed and raped by her maths teacher when she was 15.

Max applauded Grace’s bravery in a touching tribute on her birthday.

‘Just as you are finally finding peace after a rough start to life by no fault of your own. You have been taken from that peace and thrown involuntarily into traumatic chaos,’ he wrote.

‘You have been expected to talk every day for a year about the horrible things that happened to you, and demanded to come up with solutions to stop it happening again while most of the nation critiqued from their armchairs.

‘You have done and continue to do an amazing job. It’s time to have a break, you have earned it. I am so proud of you.’

Grace has called Max the ‘love of her life’ and her ‘soulmate.’

On February 10 Grace will speak with Brittany Higgins, who is also an advocate for sexual abuse survivors, at the National Press Club.
