Family Matters actress Jo Marie Payton claims co-star Jaleel White got violent 2

Family Matters actress Jo Marie Payton, 71, claims co-star Jaleel White who played Urkel got violent on set: ‘He started kicking and screaming’

Family Matters was a beloved sitcom in the 1990s, but Jo Marie Payton, who played the Winslow family matriarch, has revealed it was not always harmonious behind the scenes.

The actress, 71, alleges former co-star Jaleel White, who played Steve Urkel on the sitcom once acted out violently on set.

The ImPossible star blames the spotlight that was targeted on the young actor with affecting his attitude on the set. Jaleel joined the sitcom at age 12 as a secondary character, but quickly became a standout and the show started to center more on Urkel than on the other cast members.

‘[There was a scene where] I said we can’t do that, standards and practices will not let that pass, it’s not gonna happen,’ Payton said.

‘He wanted to do it anyway … He was so mad, he started kicking and screaming and stuff.’

The Little Mermaid actress revealed she began to leave the set when she overheard Jaleel make a comment and asked costar Darius McCrary (Eddie Winslow) to tell her what was said.

‘He said something about, “She must want to melee.” I said, “What’s a melee?” He said, “a fight.” I turned around…if he wanna fight, I would,’ she added.

The young actor prevented her from doing so, but she added in true matriarch fashion, ‘I was gonna whip his behind.’

The Proud Family actress explained at the time it happened, the Big Big Show star was ‘just a kid’ and doesn’t give him ‘all the credit’ for his actions.

Payton said, ‘I give some of those adults credit too. Letting him run wild and do whatever he wanted to do, thinking he can say what he wants to say, you know, and hurt people’s feelings and all that.’

Jo Marie left the show in 1997, and Family Matters ended its run in 1998.

Jaleel White has not responded to the allegations. He is reprising his beloved character for a new project, Did I Do That to the Holidays? A Steve Urkel Story, which is currently underway.
